Lew Wallace Sheffler was born on January 29, 1918, in Illinois. He was the son of Homer Russell Sheffler and Mrs. Ada Isola "Isola" Wallace Sheffler.
At the time of his death, Lew was serving in the #21 Operational Training Unit of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant. He was Killed in Action on April 14, 1942, when his Wellington aircraft # R 1085 had the port propeller come off in flight. The aircraft stalled, then crashed and burned at Wollerton, England.
