Frederick Newman Smith was born on September 24, 1917. He was the son of Ralph Michell Smith and Fannie Dalton Smith of Portland, Maine.

Frederick served in the 502 (R.A.F.) Squadron as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 30, 1942, when his Whitley aircraft #Z 9192 crashed on landing at St. Eval, England.
