Russell Benson Van Buren was born on September 29, 1909, in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. He was the son of of Charles Bradley Van Buren and Lena M. Van Buren, of North Troy, New York State. Russell lost his life when his plane, a Handley Page Halifax Mk II, crashed into the Waddenzee 10 km west of Harlingen, Holland. He was flying with the RAF's 76 Squadron at the time. His body was never recovered.

WO2 Van Buren is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, in England, and has a cenotaph in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, New York.
