John Archibald Wilding was born on December 27, 1920. He was the son of Archibald Wilding and of Rachel Wilding (nee Hullock), of New York City.

John served in the 426 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was Killed in Action on September 9, 1944, when his Halifax Vll NP681, which took off at 06h21 from Linton-on-Ouse, crashed at 09h03 2 miles southeast of Wallingford, Oxfordshire due to a fire in the port outer engine, which in turn led to structural failure of the wing.
