Joseph M. “Joe” Zareikin was born on July 28, 1908, in Montreal, Montreal Region, Quebec, Canada. He was the son of David and Pola Zareikin, of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.

Joseph served in the 433 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer during World War II. He was the rear gunner of Halifax bomber NP944 when it was sent on a mine-laying operation near the island of Heligoland in northwest Germany. Joe was killed instantly when their plane was attacked by a German Junkers Ju88 night fighter, although the other 6 crew members were able to return to England alive.
