John Henry Block Jr. was born on October 9, 1926, in Racine County, Wisconsin.

John probably enlisted into the Marine Corps on October 9, 1943, and was sent to the 3rd Recruit Battalion, Training Regiment, Recruit Depot at the Marine Corps Base in San Diego California. After basic training, a brief note in the Journal Times on November 13, 1943, noted Pfc. John H. Block was transferred to San Diego to Camp Elliot.

At the time of his death, he is serving in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 23, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
