Ervin P. “Bode” Bodewig was born on December 13, 1913, in Humphrey, Platte County, Nebraska. He was the son of John Jacob Bodewig and Gertrude Katheryn Hassman Bodewig. He was married to Genevieve McDermott.
Ervin attended St. Francis Grade School and graduated from Humphrey High School in 1934. He was interested in athletics, and while in high school was a member of the basketball team. After graduation, he played baseball with the Humphrey team and later played with the Schuyler team in the state league. While with the Schuyler team, he was chosen as one of the All-American Amateur Baseball Players at Battle Creek, Michigan. He was employed at the Humphrey Mill, and in a Schuyler cafe.le Creek, Michigan.
He served in Company B, 1st Armored Amphibian Battalion, United States Marine Corps, as a Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
