John Robert Bower was born on September 23, 1924, in Jefferson County, Iowa. He was the son of Floyd Amil Bower and Eva Margaret Anderson Bower.

He attended school at Lockridge and Fairfield and graduated from Fairfield High School with the class of 1943. He had been employed at the Dexter Company since graduation. He served in the 306th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 27, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
