LaVerne Mark Brown was born on November 25, 1922, in Illinois. He was the son of Mark Earl Brown and Violet Evangeline Adeana Anderson Brown.

He was graduated from Viola High School in 1940. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post of Mercer County. He served in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 25, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
