Val Cassels was born on October 15, 1914, in Montgomery County, Alabama. He was the son of Samuel Jones Cassels Sr. and Martha Darian Jones Cassels.
He attended Montgomery public schools, graduating from Lanier in 1930. He attended Mt. Hermon School in Vermont and spent four years at Davidson College in North Carolina, graduated in 1935. He was pledged to Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He took a three-year architectural course at Auburn. At college, he had accepted a reserve commission in the infantry and was called to active duty in 1941.
He served in the 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 31, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
