George Raymond Dreher was born on November 29, 1919, in East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. He was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Richard C. Dreher. He was married to Carolyn Miles.

Dreher graduated from Harvard College in 1942 and was on the hockey and football squads. Before entering the Marines, he worked for a Boston Insurance firm. He served in Company C, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 23, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
