Donald Wayne Etler was born on June 9, 1923, in Cushing, Woodbury County, Iowa. He was the son of Berten Frederick "Bert" Etler and Elsie Jane Henderson Etler.
He served in the 3rd Joint Assault Signal Company, Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 22, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
