LaVern Richard Fitzwater was born on August 3, 1922, in Canton, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Arthur Melvern Fitzwater and Helen J. Kelley Fitzwater.
Fitzwater entered the service in September 1942 and was sent overseas in February 1943. He participated in the campaigns in Bougainville and in the Marshall Islands. His overseas service was entirely spent in Japanese Combat. He was a machine gunner in the Third Marine Corps Division.
He served in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
