When Leon H. Merrill was born on August 21, 1921, in Dixfield, Maine, his father, Claude, was 19 and his mother, Gertrude, was 16. He had six brothers and eight sisters. He enlisted in the Army on December 15, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was noted as being employed in manufacturing and also as Single, without dependents. He was married to Marjorie Merrill sometime after his enlistment. Leon served as a Corporal, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He resided in Cumberland County, Maine prior to the war. Leon was "Killed In Action" in Germany during the war and was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
