Hansel David Gainous was born on April 1, 1904, in Grady County, Georgia. He was the son of John Whitfield Gainous and Missouri Elizabeth Bryant Gainous.
He served in Company B, 1st Battalion, 22nd Marine Regiment, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade as a Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 24, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
