Hershel Laverne Gaston was born on March 7, 1920. He was the son of Harry Hubert Gaston and Ethel Rae Vincent Gaston.

Gaston graduated from Mutual High School in 1938 as Valedictorian of his class and was awarded a certificate of honor and a college scholarship. He attended Business College, Wichita, Kansas, for one year.

He served in Company K, 3rd Battalion, 22nd Marine Regiment, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade as a Platoon Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 25, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
