John Jennings Gibbs Jr. was born on February 10, 1922, in Richmond City, Virginia. He was the son of John Jennings Gibbs Sr. and Ruth A. Sears Gibbs.

He served in the United States Naval Reserve as a Boatswain's Mate Second Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
