Harry Earl Gossard was born on July 29, 1917, in Ada, Hardin County, Ohio. He was the son of Chester Lincoln Gossard and Goldia Bell Moffett Gossard.

He served in Company A, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was declared as Missing in Action on July 22, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. He also has a cenotaph in West Newton Cemetery, Auglaize Township, Allen County, Ohio, USA.
