Howard Wood Hayes Jr. was born on October 25, 1925, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Howard Wood Hayes Sr. and Harriet B. Hanecy Evans.

He served in Company A, 1st Armored Amphibian Battalion, United States Marine Corps as a Private First Class during World War II. He was declared as Missing in Action on July 24, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. He has a cenotaph in Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.
