James Roy Hayes was born on January 7, 1921, in Moark, Clay County, Arkansas. He was the son of Waldo Jonathan Hayes and Beatrice Katie "Bee" Garrett Hayes.
He served in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Sergeant during World War II. He died on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
