Buryl Arley Holmes was born on November 3, 1924, in Juliaetta, Latah County, Idaho. He was the son of Frank Augustus Holmes and Vera Mabel Heriford Staley. He was married to Barbara Rose Williams Ellsworth.
He served in Company K, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
