Kenneth Eldon Knutson was born on May 11, 1922, in Ottawa, LaSalle County, Illinois. He was the son of Charles Henry Knutson and Hannah J. Johnson Knutson.

He served in the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Corporal during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. He was buried at sea after he died aboard a ship. He has a cenotaph in Belvidere Cemetery, Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois, USA.
