Silver Star Citation:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Arthur J. Kroncke (MCSN: 0-23597), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Rifle Platoon attached to the First Battalion, Twenty-First Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Marianas Islands, 25 July 1944. With his platoon pinned down by a pounding barrage of hostile automatic-weapons fire during a bold strike against enemy positions in the quarry area, Second Lieutenant Kroncke courageously advanced toward the leading supporting tank in a valiant effort to direct its fire against the Japanese machine gun retarding the advance of his unit. Unhesitatingly exposing himself to an intense barrage from enemy weapons, he repeatedly attempted to establish contact with the armored vehicle by telephone until he was fatally wounded by Japanese rifle fire. Second Lieutenant Kroncke's daring initiative and great personal valor in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
