Robert Joseph Lemay was born on January 16, 1916, in Berlin, Coos County, New Hampshire. He was the son of John B. Lemay and Lea M. Lemay. He was the husband of Dolores M. Laroche Lemay.
He served in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 22nd Marine Regiment, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade as a Private First Class during World War II. On the night of July 25, when the front lines were in danger of being overwhelmed during a desperate enemy counterattack, Lemay steadfastly maintained his position despite devastating rifle, machine-gun, and mortar fire and accurately delivering intense return rifle fire against the Japanese assisting in thwarting the vicious onslaught.
Although mortally wounded during the fierce action, Lemay by his daring initiative and valiant fighting spirit, had contributed materially to the success of the engagement. He was Killed in Action on July 25, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
