Walter Martin Lewandowski was born on January 8, 1920, in Lyndhurst, Bergen County, New Jersey. He was the son of Walenty Lewandowski and Stella Lewandowski.

He served in Company A, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. There is a monument, featuring a large plaque and three gold stars, in Lewandowski Park in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. There is also a street named after the 3 brothers, Lewandowski Street.
