David Walter Lewis was born on October 18, 1915, in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina. He was the son of John Henry Lewis and Hattie Lee Baldwin Lewis.
He served in the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade as a Corporal during World War II. He was declared as Missing in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
