Charles LeRoy Mills was born on September 30, 1917, in Mississippi. He was the son of Charles Philemon "Charlie" Mills and Arbie Huggins Mills.
He served in Company C, 3rd Amphibian Tractor Battalion, III Amphibious Corps as a Captain during World War II. On the third trip to the beach, Capt. Mills "Buffalo" struck a land mine near Chonito Cliff, Capt. Mills suffered an injury to his leg but remained conscious and continued directing the movement of the sea-going tractors and supervised aid for the wounded. He was put into another tractor for transfer to a troop transport in the bay. The tractor suffered a direct hit from mortar fire on the way across the reef, and Capt. Mills was killed. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. The Amphibious Tractor Camp on Guam has been named Camp Mills in his honor.
