William Jay “Box” Nelson was born on May 23, 1925, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Charles Albert Nelson Sr. and Katherine Elizabeth Donnelly Barnett.
He served in Company G, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. he was Killed in Action on August 9, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
