Robert W. Nolan was born on November 1, 1919, in Moscow, Latah County, Idaho. He was the son of James Walter Nolan Sr. and Charity Rebecca Greenwood Nolan.
He served in Company A, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
