                            John William Leonard Sr. was born on July 6, 1918, in Westover, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Edwin Joseph Leonard and Annie Beatrice O'Brien Leonard. 
He was assigned to the 710th Bomber Squadron, 447th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a left waist gunner of B-17 42-31431 (aka Solid Sender) during World War II. Shot down by flak and crashed while enroute to the target in Regensburg on February 25, 1944. He was taken as a POW in Barth, Germany. He was given an honorable discharge on October 16, 1945.
