Dale William Burkhead was born on April 16, 1921, in Illinois. He was the son of Gladys Ritchie. He was married to Deloris Eileen Burkhead.
He served in the 323rd Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. He was the co-pilot of the B-17G 43-37594 "Strictly GI" that was shot down after a bombing mission in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen, Germany, crashing at Lachen-Speyerdorf Forest. He was taken as a POW. He died on December 6, 1992.
