Joseph Andrew Kasperko Jr. was born on April 15, 1921, in McKees Rocks, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Joseph Kasperko and Mary S. Kasperko.
He had been working at a dairy store when the war came and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in August 1942 with the hopes of becoming a pilot. He served in the 323rd Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant during World War II. He was the radio operator and gunner of the B-17G 43-37594 "Strictly GI" that was shot down after a bombing mission in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen, Germany, crashing at Lachen-Speyerdorf Forest. He was Killed in Action on September 9, 1944, during the mission.
