Donal H. Laird was born on April 25, 1924, in San Luis Obispo County, California. He was the son of Harry Laird.
He served in the 323rd Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant during World War II. He was the ball turret gunner of the B-17G 43-37594 "Strictly GI" that was shot down after a bombing mission in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen, Germany, crashing at Lachen-Speyerdorf Forest. He was Killed in Action on September 9, 1944, during the mission.
