Ellsworth Eaton Payne was born on August 11, 1920, in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Edwin W Payne Sr. and Clara Louisa Eaton Payne.
He served in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 24, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. He was buried at sea.
