Navy Cross Citation:
"For extraordinary heroism as assistant leader of a rifle squad serving with the first battalion, 21st Marines, Third Marine Division. In action against enemy Japanese forces at Asan-Adelup, Guam, Marianas Islands, on the night of 25-26 July 1944. Occupying a position with his squad in the line held by his company during a fierce enemy banzai (suicide) charge, Cpl. Poulin volunteered to man a machine gun which had previously been put out of action and, courageously advancing 50 yards under heavy concentrations of Japanese fire, successfully gained his objective, restored the gun to action and relentlessly fought off the hostile attack, killing at least 10 of the enemy before he was mortally wounded. Cpl. Poulin's splendid initiative and indomitable fighting spirit in the face of grave peril enabled his comrades to reman their crewless guns, thereby contributing materially to the repulsion of the enemy attack, and his self-sacrificing devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States naval service. He gallantly gave his life for his country."
