James Wilbert Raynes Jr. was born on December 13, 1919, in Abilene, Taylor County, Texas. He was the son of James W. Raynes Sr. and Ella Nora Hollomon Raynes. He was married to Audrey Leon Schleher Raynes Wilson.
He served in Company K, 3rd Battalion, 22nd Marine Regiment, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 27, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
