Joseph H. Rohde was born on October 2, 1922, in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was the son of Charles Joseph Rohde and Margaret Cuff Rohde.
He served in the United States Naval Reserve as an Ensign during World War II. Rohde was a Navy fighter pilot flying the F6F Hellcat off the carrier USS Yorktown and was reported missing over ChiChi-Jima on July 15, 1944, officially declared Killed In Action on July 16, 1945.
