Joel Wilson “Joe” Sawyer was born on September 29, 1922, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. He was the son of John George Sawyer and Pearlie Lee Wilson Sawyer.
He served in the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Marine Regiment, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade as a Corporal during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
