James Dyer Schloot was born on August 4, 1923, in Linton, Greene County, Indiana. He was the son of Donald Freeman Schloot and Abby Katherine Dyer DeFrees.
He attended the Worthington schools. During his high school years, he attended Culver Military Academy and graduated from the Kentucky Military Academy in June 1942. He enlisted in the United States Marines on July 28 of that same year and received his training at the Marine base at San Diego, California. Upon completion of his basic training, he and fourteen other members of his class were selected for special training in the Scout and Snipers school at Green’s Farms near San Diego. He served in Company F, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 25, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
