James Woodrow Shattwell was born on August 29, 1922, in Jasper, Newton County, Arkansas. He was the son of Buddie Shattwell and Elma Ann "Elmi" Ewing Bailey.
He served in the Weapons Company, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on August 13, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
