Charles Gordon Smith was born on March 17, 1919, in Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama. He was the son of Andrew O. Smith and Mamie L. Smith. He was married to Mary Frank (Turner) Smith.
He served in Company C, 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Corporal during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
