Arthur Clarence “Douche” Squires was born on November 1, 1923, in Orange, Franklin County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Arthur Clarence Squires Sr. and Myrtle Cora "Mercie" Goodrich Squires.
He served in Company C, 1st Battalion, 22nd Marine Regiment, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 24, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. Squires is a marine mortarman. And mortarmen are not expected to fight it out in infantry fashion with the enemy. Rather, they remain behind the lines to send up their deadly missiles.
But the situation confronting Squires was somewhat confused the second night after marines had landed below Agat and smashed through the demolished town. The Marines were forced back among the ruined buildings for the night and Squires mortar unit was instructed to set up on the front line defense.
About 2 am he noticed some crouching figures scurrying through the marine lines toward the rear. Squires turned on his carbine. One of the trapped Japanese threw a grenade into Squires' foxhole. The explosion killed one marine and wounded another. Fourteen Japanese, carrying three machine guns, were left strewn along the road, all well within the marine lines, when the firing ceased. They had attempted to enter the town to set up a surprise position. The surprise was theirs.
