John D. Stevens served in the United States Naval Reserve as an Aviation Radioman Second Class during World War II. He also served as a gunner/radio operator on a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, U.S.S. Yorktown (CV-10), U.S. Navy during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on July 17, 1944, when his SB2C was shot down by ground anti-aircraft fire during an attack on Guam and crashed into the sea. He was officially declared by the military as being dead on February 4, 1946.
