Harrel B. Sumrall was born in 1924, in Sumrall, Lamar County, Mississippi. He was the son of Barney Sumrall and Rosa Lee Holmes Sumrall.
He served in the Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Corporal during World War II. While he was assisting two hospital corpsmen in administering plasma to a wounded man, a mortar shell exploded nearby, causing instant death to all four in the group. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
