George Ellis �Sonny� Thompson was born on April 25, 1925, in Aurora, Florence County, Wisconsin. He was the son of Emmett Ross Thompson and Hildegarde Anna "Hilda Annie" Kronsnoble Thompson.

He served in Company G, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 25, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
