William Joseph �Jerry� Valek was born on December 16, 1922, in Albany, Albany County, New York. He was the son of John C. Valek and Frances T. Horick Valek.

He served in the Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. He was buried at sea but he has a cenotaph in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie, Albany County, New York, USA.
