Harold Lyle Van Patten was born on July 2, 1922, in Quincy, Branch County, Michigan. He was the son of John Calvin "Gent" Van Patten and Fredia Ann Reynolds Van Patten.
He served in the 3rd Signal Company, Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division as a Private during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 27, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
