Samuel J. Wasel was born on May 4, 1905, in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Both his parents, Simanas and Marsalai Kazlauskas, died while he was young. He was adopted by Simanas's niece Mary Wasel and her husband Stanley. He was married to Rose Ruska.
He served in the Infantry of the United States Army as a Technician 4th Grade during World War II. He died on August 6, 1944, during the Battle for Guam.
