Robert Le Grand Owens was born on June 21, 1920, in Iona, Bonneville County, Idaho. He was the son of Alma Legrande "A.L. or Al" Owens and Sarah Ellen "Sadie" Steele Owens. He was married to Vera Loree Evans Owens. He had a son namely Robert LeGrande Owens Jr.
He served in the 873rd Bomber Squadron, 498th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and bombardier of B-29 Superfortress #44-69747 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on March 10, 1945, when the aircraft made a navigational error and crashed into Mt. Fubo.
