Walter Joseph Gutowski was born in 1919, in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. He was the son of Jan Gutowski and Michalina Sieczka Gutowski.
Gutowski enlisted Army on January 16, 1942. He served in the 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 3, 1944, during the liberation of Dol-de-Bretagne. He was awarded the Purple Heart and was buried at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.
